Finally he turn to me, reachin' out fo' my arms, then before he touches skin, droppin' them back to his side. His eyes search mine, while I search his- lookin' fo' any anger in all the melancholy. An' then when he done- I find a speck of sompin' in him, sompin' that perhaps mean he trust me. Fogive me fo' all I done in his mind. It weird- that speck- cause I don' expect it none.
"She didn't die."
She. So there had once been a gurl, I guess he had admitted that to me 'fore- in a way. But a gurl, someone whom he loved mo' than me- mo' than he could ever love me. But I guess it ain't loved- I guess it love. Cause she ain't dead. So he love her an' he here with me. Why don't he jus' tell his father that he wanna marry her?
"Then why you ain't there with her?"
I stopped carin' that I pryin', so I make no apologies fo' sayin' that. I wanna kno', an' here an' now- the first time that he sharin'- don't seem like I good time to bein' goin' back to bein' all polite like. But even so, I don't turn to look at Mary- cause she probably standin' there even mo' smug. She think he ain't even never gonna like me after this. But I dunno- things seem to changin'.
"It a lon' story," he say, runnin' his fingers through his hair. He sigh, loud, an' then start walkin' 'gain.
I hurry to catch up, Mary followin' quick behind me. "We got lots a time. Please- I jus' wanna kno' why you hate me."
I kno' he don't hate me- but he don't know that I kno'. I playin' 'em here- tuggin' at his heart. I kno' I shouldn't, it wron'. But I do anyway.
"I tried everythin' to make you like me- make a marriage to you possible. But- but I dunno." I shed a light tear, makin' sure that I ain't lookin' at his face. But I kno' his gaze is on mine- watchin' that tear role- 'till my finger comes up an' captures it. "Please tell me why you hate me."
"I asked fo' her hand," he say- all quiet now. I take a shaky breath, an' look up- 'tween my eyelashes.
"Go," I sniffle, "On." I sniffle a second time- tryin' to pretend that I could start cryin' again- any time now.
"She refused my marriage- on account of her engagement. She jus' recently returned- widowed. See this was over two years 'go- when we was both youn'- that I asked her. An' when she returned- with a chil'- she wanted me to take her. But- but I couldn't. Father wouldn't let me- cause I all ready had someone." He pause. "You."
