The Misses seem like she pretendin' that I don' even exist. She was down here, eatin', by the time I was all dressed an' ready. She looks real pretty, mos' her hair left down fo' a change. It's my color, down below her breasts an' mos' straight. There a few misplaced curls, but not as many as my own has, an' they not real tight. Her dress mo' casual than normal, an' it a sandy, brown color. But what real strange, is the smile on her face, while she talkin' to our host, Lauren.
An' it so strange, cause she didn't even turn ta me, when I came in. Didn't even respond, to my formal, lady like an' well rehearsed greetin'. She jus' talkin' joyful with Lauren, like I Neva even seen her do before. She ain't like this talkin' with daddy or me, or Mary or Miss. Lizabeth. An' it used to seem that she got prettier, with the mo' anger she had. But ain't the case, cause she real gorgeous with a real smile.
So I take a seat, an' the slave rushes ta get me mo' tea. I got nothin' else ta do, so I jus' listen in on the gossip, the Misses an' Lauren re sharin'.
"Oh, wow Rose," Lauren say, ta the Misses, "You really outta the loop. You didn't hear 'bout Alice an' the ripped dress."
"Ripped dress?" The Misses asks, almos' laughin'. I never thought I'd see the day of the Misses laughin', especially from glee.
"Yes, Lindsey stepped on her dress," Lauren respond, a gasp in her voice. "an' it came almos' completely off. It was real funny. She was pink in the face an' had take refuge 'hind one of 'er slaves."
"Oh, I do wish I coulda been there."
"You shoulda been, Richard didn't want ya to go?" Lauren's voice drops ta a whisper, when she says daddy's name. Almos' like she afraid.
"Nah, he said I needed ta watch over them house slaves, cause he had no time. Cept, that supposed ta be his daughters jobs. Not mine."
Now she talkin' bout me like I ain't even here. That jus' wonderful. Maybe she jus' didn't even see me. Or hear me...
"I never even liked him," Lauren say. "You can stay here with me, if ya like, fo' a while. Since Jacob died, I been awful lonely. It'd be nice to have someone, who ain't colored, to talk to."
" I got Corinne with me," The Misses say, waving in my general direction. So she do kno' I here. "What I supposed ta do with her? Nah, thanks fo' the offer, Lauren but in a week I, I mean we gotta go back."
