Antebellum
question answered at least. I reach out, gently graspin' his wrist in my hand. It's real hot, feelin' like the sun in my ice palm. I rub my fingers against him, all
gentle, tryin' to make some of his warmth come off on me. It don't work too well, but I keep holdin' on anyway. I look up into his blue eyes, lookin' extra like the sky in this light, mentally pleadin' with him to answer me. Perhaps I started out too strong. He don't seem like he used to the type of woman who speaks. Not most people are, sometime I even scare myself.
"I-"
He interrupt me, pullin' his arm away, snappin' it down to his side. He steps back, glancin' at Cecile who is frozen in place.
"What you talkin' 'bout?"
"I'm sorry, I'm jus' so anxious 'bout my sister gettin' married and all," I say, tryin' to back off, though it real hard. "I jus'- is it your plan to marry me?"
I hope he don't think I'm bein' too forward, but after my little harsh slip it the best I can do. He studies me for a minute, tryin' to see if I serious.
"My father thinks it'd be best," he says, finally, confirminin' my suspicion 'bout two things. The man smokin' with my daddy is Lloyd's father and for some reason he want all the power my daddy can give. What I still don't know is why my daddy is willin' to give it.
I pause, thinkin', Lloyd probably can't even give me an answer on that one, I'll jus' have to do some spyin' of my own.
"What 'bout you?" The question is purely selfish. Part of me wants to know if I've truly got 'em wrapped 'round my finger. The other part of me jus' wants to know.
He thinks 'bout this for a minute and we start walkin' again, no longer touchin'.
"I wanna get married someday and there ain't nothin' wrong with you."
While I'm flattered that he thinks of me so highly, I note that he says it kinda sad like, lookin' up at the sky.
"Who was she?"
He looks back down at me, all surprised like, makin' me feel real short. That the one thing 'bout my looks that I don't like, I too tall. Bein' with a man taller than daddy can be real nice sometimes.
"No one important."
And with that we fall into silence.
