INTERLUDE CONT'D.

Nell's world, a world of gloomy streets behind buildings, a world of digging through dumpsters for spare wiring (if the drug-users haven't taken it all yet) is a world where rape is used to control girls (and sometimes boys) like herself. It is a constant threat for her, and when she went to The Afterdark's home when Sneak Peek told her to avoid robots, The Afterdark reminded her as bluntly as possible while still being tactful.

He'd told her then that she was teaching dragons how to breathe fire, they had both acknowledged that she was lucky to be as safe as she was, that she had dodged a metaphorical bullet by being useful.

So when he kissed her, she was scared. Televisions are less likely to show sex-scenes in the fronts of their stores than kissing scenes, but Nell's subconscious fills in the blanks with pain and hurt and a deep feeling of betrayal. The things her mind can most clearly simulate are the things that stand out most.

They are naked. He is touching her everywhere and grabbing her greedily. She wants him to stop because she is afraid and he is hurting her. He won't stop, not ever. So she fights against him, and she loses. The Afterdark hurls her to the ground and descends upon her. He shocks her with a stun baton like the one the mercenaries had again and again, again and again until she can't scream anymore, even in the dream where her legs are wrapped around him.
