Nell turned around casually, but jumped when she saw Derek standing in the doorway. Even though the doors were scaled up, he still took up most of the frame.
"You scared me."
"Sorry. Quiet feet." Nell knew he wasn't actually sorry. He continued, "Felt you get up. Came to investigate. Nothing interesting. I'm going to eat breakfast."
Nell was admittedly interested by the prospect of food, so she followed her host to the kitchen nook. Derek ate oatmeal, so she did too.
"So," Derek began in a very serious tone as he scraped the last of his breakfast out of its bowl. He almost seemed annoyed. "You're kind of a blanket hog, aren't you?"
The Fixer was unsure of how to interpret that until The Afterdark smiled and shook his head. "I'm not mad, Nell. Calm down."
"Oh," she managed. "Oh, okay.
"It's just that, well, I don't usually have a bed, right? I do have space blankets--you know, the ones that look like tinfoil--and some other stuff, but I always have to make a cocoon. That way the cold won't get in quite as quickly. Gotta try to stay warm."
Derek raised both of his eyebrows in mock concern. "Sad," he commented flatly.
He put his bowl in the sink, leaned against the counter, and looked into space pensively. "I kind of think we should hunt down Seer and kill him."
Nell choked briefly on her oatmeal.
