The two spent the day watching television, waiting for night to fall so The Afterdark could sneak out to the precinct offices and steal files. Nell had had little exposure to actual television shows (although Derek had no doubt that she could have disassembled and reassembled his TV in less than an hour), so Derek started by explaining daytime television to her.
Daytime television was one of Derek's all-time favorite things. He liked watching white trash fight in front of other people. He was a firm believer that it was all faked, but he also felt that it was the most accurate portrayal of humanity in the history of Homo sapiens. He explained his views to Nell, who was more interested in the commercials.
"They're all about school for adults," she told him mournfully. "I wish I could do that. School, I mean."
The Afterdark didn't respond. In the ad, people were talking about how easy it was to be a mechanic, and how they had only gone to school for two years.
"I was doing that when I was four," Nell informed with disdain.
Derek cracked a smile. "Yeah, those schools aren't for the smart kids like you."
Then the show with the white trash came back on. This show was particularly funny to Derek. Two relatively attractive women (a five and a six on the hotness scale) fought over an overly hideous man (a two at best). Derek considered himself to be at least an eight on the scale, and he'd never had women fight over him (he'd always just had sex with both, sometimes at the same time).
"I don't get this," Nell said.
"I know, those chicks could really do better," Derek sighed. "That guy is an uggo if I ever saw one."
