"Sorry, I gotta take this," the girl apologized to Platform. She answered the call.
"Hey, Fixer?"
"It's me," she confirmed. Nell made a 'hang on' gesture to Platform, whose eyes went wide, as if with fear. Nell wasn't sure why.
"Glad I caught you. Avoid doing anything dangerous today."
"Any reason in particular?"
"You don't want to be in a hospital today, believe me," Sneak Peek said. His words felt causal but his tone was foreboding. She didn't like that.
A chill ran up Nell's spine. She glanced at Platform, who was smiling now, looking far too calm in the hallway. Sneak Peek hung up.
To Platform, Nell said, "I gotta call someone." Frustration flashed across the older woman's face before being stifled by a fake smile.
Nell dialed The Afterdark, who answered with an obscenity and a "How did you get this number?"
"Hey," Nell said weakly. "I'm at the hospital. Turns out there's some stuff going on at the place with the guy."
The Fixer wished she had a code word to say to Derek so he'd know she needed his help.
He hung up on her.
