Derek was momentously proud of himself, and deservedly so. He had single-handedly committed more felonies than anyone else in the history of the city, and the boxes were filled with case files.
"These are all you?" Nell asked. She was looking through one of the folders from one of the boxes. "I didn't know one person could manage all of this. You have to have broken a few world records with all this..."
Derek approached and sat on the floor across from her. He removed his mask and gloves, then kicked off his shoes. "All me," he confirmed.
Nell brandished a photograph. "It says that this is the best picture they have of you." The black and white screen shot appeared to be from a surveillance camera. It showed an indistinct black blur that could have been in the shape of nearly anything.
"Yes," he said, scooting a bit closer to the other box.
"What is it called when you move shadows? As a power, I mean. Like they call me a technopath."
"Umbrakinesis," The Afterdark said proudly. "I'm also a telepath, which is why there are never any witness statements."
"And you're a fucking giant."
"That as well, although that's not a power so much as a freak accident of genetics. My strength is more or less proportionate--and it's not like I don't work out--to my height, so people tend to think I'm unusually strong." Then, anticipating her next question, "I'm seven-foot-ten."
"I'm five-five," Nell replied.
Derek found that piece of information irrelevant and couldn't for the life of him understand why she had shared it. She fished through and found another folder. "They don't know shit about you. None of these things they've accused you of would ever stand up in court."
