"You don't get that choice," he told her. "When I save you, you tell me what you know. There is no negotiating, God damnit."
Nell didn't like Derek demanding things of her, but she conceded that she owed him information at the very least. "Not really means not really. They dragged me out of the hummer and everyone kind of stood around and they teased me. One of them grabbed my chest--"
She heard Derek make a hissing sound back in his throat. He kicked at one of the bodies on the ground.
"--but that was pretty much it. I have no idea why they wanted me, and I'm especially not sure why they brought me out here to the middle of nowhere, but it sure felt like they were waiting for something when we got out."
She got her last cuff off and slung her backpack on. Derek was already walking away, so she ran to his side. Nell had to take two steps for every one of his. "How did you find me?"
"I was leaving the hospital and I heard someone think about you, so I followed the thought to the Hummer. One of the normals there must have had his helmet off, because I could hear him. So I focused on him and found out where you were all headed to, and I jogged cross-country to the spot. It actually wasn't that far as the crow flies."
Nell was touched that he had done this for her. "I wish I knew why Platform did this to me."
"Someone payed her off," The Afterdark said. His shaded, blurry figure shrugged its Goliath shoulders.
