Nell's phone began chiming from the bedroom. She didn't want to answer it, but the only person who had been calling with any frequency was Richard--AKA Sneak Peek--and he'd been sharing nothing but immensely helpful information.
She clambered awkwardly out of the blanket she'd wrapped into a cocoon, out from under Derek's arm, and onto the floor. She jogged to the bedroom (the pain was almost overwhelming) with a sense of urgency and, after some digging through her backpack, answered her phone.
Yeah, it was Richard.
"Hello?" Nell greeted.
"Hey, Fixer," he said. There was no hurry in his voice, and that relaxed Nell. He said, "I hope I wasn't too late yesterday when I called you."
Nell wasn't going to tell him that he had been too late, as she thought it might hurt his feelings. Instead, she asked, "Why did you think that?"
"Because last night's news--yesterday afternoon's future news--changed abruptly from you being apprehended in a hospital by some vigilante group to a bunch of bodies being found in the woods."
"Ah. Well, yes, you weren't quite on time, but everything worked out," she told him.
"Glad to hear you're alright, Fixer. I'll call you if anything on the news changes."
"Thank you very much," she said. She meant it, too. "You're a good friend, Richard. Not many people would help me out like this."
"It's nothing," he said sheepishly. "Be seeing you."
They hung up simultaneously.
