"Yeah. I'm pretty sure that Seer works for the government... or at least close to them. Probably local to deal with cops and stuff. Not that I have a very good understanding of how the government works."
Derek did, but he didn't much care about the government. He did what he wanted and that was that.
"Derek, when you kill Seer, can you bring back Ben if she's with him?" she asked when his back was turned and the coffee machine hummed.
He didn't turn around. He asked, "I thought you were concerned about that missing smart kid. Besides, your robot is broken and dismantled by now."
"I am worried about that kid, but I knew Ben. I want to give her a funeral."
"That, Nell, sounded incredibly stupid. And I'm not particularly inclined to rescue that mindless machine," he told her, finally turning around to face the girl.
She was frowning at him intensely. "Well maybe you should bring her back because you hate robots so much and you don't want anyone making any more of them."
"Touche," he said. It was one of the few French words he knew. "I'll get your robot if it's convenient for me to do so. But I doubt it will be."
Nell's scowl lessened. "People like Seer--villains I mean--they get used to not having problems. I mean, you and I both know that the city is low on heroes."
Derek smiled. There had been a blessed lack of do-gooders in the last year or so. It had made his life easy.
The girl continued, "I know villains pretty well. You're the only one who hasn't gotten lax about security over time. People don't get caught, so they relax."
