snippet from Nell and The Afterdark
Nell and The Afterdark
The Afterdark had called attention to himself by now, and Nell ducked back into the stairwell to avoid gunfire. She heard the noises of people in flak jackets moving, and a shot was fired from a handgun.
Nell winced, and heard a scream that wasn't Derek's. She peered from around the corner, and saw with sick satisfaction that The Afterdark had used his laser gun to kill a guard. She scrambled back to the safety of his shadow, and saw that even after killing someone, he was still not smiling. Bad sign.
The sound of sniffling came from a door midway down the hall. Derek moved, surprisingly cat-like, to the frame, and shouldered the door in like it was styrofoam.
"Rebecca," he said. Nell saw him recoil with his entire body. Nell only knew one Rebecca, and that was Platform. She went to Derek's side to take a look.
Platform was curled in a corner, weeping and clinging to a boy who obviously did not want to be held or touched. He squirmed, but Platform's grip was tight.
"I didn't tell him who you are, D--Afterdark. I swear, I have always kept that a secret from him," Rebecca choked. Nell didn't like the crazed look of fear in her eyes. "He made me come here so I could get the boy to talk, I'm not here to get in your way--"
The Afterdark had already crossed the room. With great finesse, he removed the now-squealing boy from her arms and set him on his feet, shoving him toward Nell. The giant grabbed the woman and pinned her to the wall. He said something to her in hushed, grating tones, and snapped her neck.
Nell decided that she would not miss Platform.
