The lower lid of The Afterdark's left eye twitched erratically. He didn't notice. More than ever, he looked like a crazy person.
The men moved and leveled their weapons every which way. One pointed in Nell and Derek's direction.
"He's got to be close! His range isn't that great when he's hiding!"
Derek looked shocked and outraged. It was an expression that Nell had never seen on him. His mouth fell open slightly, then his lips pulled back from his slightly pointy teeth and his brow angled down. Nell hadn't known of this limitation, and she wondered how this stranger had.
Outside of the shadow, the sun was almost done setting and Nell's ability to see was really terrible. She was cold. Her hip throbbed.
Derek's head snapped to look over at Nell. He extended a hand and motioned for her to take it. She put her hand in his massive palm. He stood and guided her along behind a tree. They made the least amount of noise possible, but it was impossible to be perfectly silent.
Shots were fired, but Nell was already positioned by Derek behind the tree. He ran off, leaving her barely hidden from view. She closed her eyes childishly and held the monkey wrench to her chest.
The guns went off, but not pointed at her. She saw Derek's monstrous shadow running like a cheetah away from her and the men with guns.
"Son-of-a-bitch," she breathed, watching him run away from her. "Motherfucking son-of-a-bitch left me to die."
She looked away from Derek and was met by the man who had been yelling. She swung her wrench gracelessly in delusional hopes of fighting him off, and he blocked with his gun, then hit her in the face with his right hand.
