Nell and The Afterdark
"Yep."
Nell was surprised by how non-threatening this group was compared to the last. Different squads, different methods, as one of them had said. Nell hadn't even seen a single shock baton, but that didn't mean they weren't there.
She sat in silence with her arms crossed.
"Why were you going to see the robot?"
Nell scowled. "Her name was Ben. I was going to see her because she was my friend. What did you do with her?"
"Classified," someone said. Nell thought that was to be expected. The van stopped and there was suddenly much shuffling of limbs and weapons, and Nell was pulled up by the man nearest her.
Words were said, but Nell didn't catch what they were. It was too fast and she was paying attention to other things.
"Don't try anything," the person holding her arm said. He sounded bored, and Nell was pretty sure he wasn't expecting her to do anything. That was just as well--she didn't plan to be unpleasant. She did hope that Derek didn't spend too long on his computer.
The van's back doors opened one at a time to reveal more people in helmets carrying automatic weapons. Their stance was relaxed, but Nell thought that was probably a ruse. She wished, not for the first time, that she could see through their mirrored visors just the same as she could see through other one-way glass. It was a power she almost never used, but every time the situation had called for it, the ability had been unfathomably useful.
