Nell Conrad is used to sleeping in tiny nooks, in wide open and unprotected spaces, in places cooking in the sun, and in cardboard boxes. Sometimes she gets to sleep somewhere inside, usually when she is working. Those are the only times she has dreams she can remember. Outside, she sleeps only when exhaustion is too much. She crashes, and that's that. Inside, she can sleep when she pleases, and she can afford to remember her dreams.
In The Afterdark's bed, she dreams about people she knows in places with which she is familiar. Nell's mind isn't very imaginative, and her dreams play out like general fiction rather than fantasy.
In this particular dream, things around her are colored a faded olive color, a good match with her headband. There are dust-brown traces for highlights that match her jumpsuit, and some copper and verdegris points for her hair and eyes. The dream is an extension of herself, drawing inspiration from the colors of her normal getup.
