A shadow stumbled from behind the car and ran behind the Hummer. Nell found herself grinning broadly--he'd come for her!
A black smudge of lightlessness consumed the Hummer and a few feet beyond like an oil spill that one couldn't quite see. The dark could hurt peoples' eyes just the same as bright light because they strained to see through it and couldn't. Nell was caught in that situation, staring into the artificial night that Derek had created.
It spread out and wrapped around some of the men. They would be almost completely blind in there, unlike The Afterdark, whose sight was like an owl's in the dark.
One man stepped back and turned toward Nell. She couldn't see his face because of his visor, but knew he was surprised that she wasn't hooded. He pulled out his stun baton and bent over to grab Nell. He dragged her away from the expanding shadow (from which could be heard the sounds of men screaming). At a "safe" distance, he lifted her and slammed her back into a tree.
"What is going on?" he demanded.
Nell steeled herself for a zap from the baton. She closed her eyes. "I don't know."
A sustained, painful, shock to her neck. She was going to scream, but the man covered her mouth with a gloved hand. "Don't you dare make any noises, you little bitch. Tell me what the Hell is going on or I will do worse than just shock you."
He removed his hand. Nell screamed incoherently toward the shadow so Derek could find her. Her attacker dropped the stun baton and pulled a handgun from its holster at his hip. He shot Nell once in the abdomen. "I warned you."
