Time skipped ahead and she was on the stairs, moving upwards, going backwards. Nell's arms were around shoulders, and her head was tucked unto the crook of someone's neck with her eyes peeping out over their back.
Her injured arm was numb, but she could feel her heart pumping blood to it still.
When next Nell was conscious, she was somewhere else again. Lying on her back now. Arm still numb. Head throbbing with every heartbeat. She's pretty sure she's just on a table. Nothing special. Certainly not a hospital. She thought, Derek's gonna kill all these guys.
Her head tilted to the her hurt side. She blinked once, slowly. She saw that someone, not Seer, with a curved needle, was sewing up her arm. Nell blinked, and then the person was done with the stitches and she was propped up. Nell yawned expansively.
----------
Derek waited stubbornly for many hours after the light started to blink before leaving. He meant to punish Nell for complicating his plans, although he also had to acknowledge that she'd found something and he hadn't.
Part of it was that he wanted her to worry, but most of it was that The Afterdark wanted to prove to himself that he hadn't grown fond of Nell. But he had, and that wasn't anything too recent. He'd been fond of Nell since last winter, when she'd almost died.
Because he liked her, he brought the laser weapon she'd made for him when he left his home. Seer was gonna die, one burn hole at a time.
