Nell and The Afterdark
"Why did you save me?" She asked.
Nell couldn't see his face and therefore had no ability to discern his moods. He took his time thinking about it, and in the end chose not to answer. She didn't know how to take it, but followed her heart and decided that, above all, she was insulted.
"Hey, I asked--"
He made a rumbling sound deep in his chest to warn her.
"I just--"
He shoved her to the ground--she landed painfully on her hip--and kept walking. The girl started to get up to confront him, but she noticed something important.
To her left, on the dirt and tangled in the roots of a large oak tree, was the body of the young man who had been on her side, the only human among the animals who had taken her. His dark eyes were open, and they weren't serious anymore. His skin was ashen, and his arms had been torn off of his body by The Afterdark.
Nell closed the man's eyes. She didn't know his name, but wished she had. The girl turned from the body back to where Derek was still walking away, and remembered that he was a brutal villain with no qualms about being evil. In the end, she didn't yell at him again. She touched the dead body and told him under her breath that she appreciated his humanity.
She went to Derek. The way the shadows clung to him but hung behind when he moved gave the impression that he moved very slowly.
"Are you feeling alright, Fixer?"
"How do you mean?"
