She shrieked in pain and fear, and was hardly able to put up a fight when he tore her weapon from her and used it to pummel her.
Impacts to her shoulder, then her ribs, then her bad hip made her crumple to the ground. The man twirled her weapon deftly.
"Glad I found you," he told her like they were business contacts who had run into each other at a coffee shop.
"You work for Seer?" Nell asked through a stream of blood from her mouth. None of her teeth were broken, but the wrench had made her cut her lips on her own teeth, and now they bled.
She moved to get up--she had to at least try to get away, or she'd never forgive herself. She didn't really expect an answer for her question.
He responded to her defiance by grabbing her neck and forcing her back to the dirt. She twisted and tried to kick him away before he could hurt her or do something worse, but he clearly knew more about wrestling than she did, and held her there. "I work for money," he finally answered her.
He threw her wrench away and pulled one of those damned shock batons out. "When they picked you up, they told those of us back at headquarters that you didn't like these things so well. Here's what I'm gonna do."
Nell expected a proposition, but instead he zapped her in the abdomen.
----------
Derek and Nell had only walked two or so miles before they'd had to hide, and Derek ran that distance like a pro. He wondered if a Hummer would take out a pickup truck in a game of chicken. It was going to have to.
He found the vehicles and rejoiced, climbing awkwardly into the Hummer's driver seat. Derek was uncomfortable in the vehicle (eight feet tall was no way to go through life), one of the many reasons he never drove, but he was able to make it work.
