Nell and The Afterdark
He didn't feel the need to justify himself, so he let her keep staring at him. He said, "If you aren't going to drink, do you want something to eat?"
Her resolve crumbled. "More than anything."
Derek fished through the fridge and retrieved some salad leftovers. For a bachelor, he was a pretty healthy eater. Nell did not protest the fact that she was being given old food. Any food was cause for celebration, Derek knew. "When was the last time you ate?"
"A day ago," she lied. From the state of her, it had probably been closer to three days. He remembered last winter, when the girl had told him about her eating habits, and how food only came twice or thrice a week.
He'd never understood why. She made more money than most adults did, and could easily have afforded enough food to keep from being hungry. He didn't care enough about her well-being to ask what she did with her money, but he was slightly curious.
"How long do you plan to stay here?"
"Not sure," she said, still shoveling food into her mouth. He wasn't averse to Nell's company, but he didn't want her around all the time. It wasn't like he didn't have places to be, things to steal, and people to slaughter. She was a good (where good was defined as someone who interested Derek) person, but the idea of her living for too long in his home made him uncomfortable. He was a secretive person by nature, and Nell was investigative.
He said, "Okay then," anyway.
She squinted and frowned again. "Do you have plans or something?"
"For you or for me?" He asked.
