Derek knew Nell to be a heavy sleeper when she actually got around to sleeping (you had to be a heavy sleeper if you lived in the city). She never snored, and that was one of the main reasons that he didn't object to her living in his warehouse home. He finished his beer slowly, wondering from time to time if the girl was even breathing because she was so slow at it.
When finally the booze was gone, he got up and walked casually around the table. He prodded her once in the shoulder and she didn't move, so he grabbed her by the waist and slung her over his shoulder. She mumbled something that he didn't hear as he carried her bodily to his bedroom. He tossed her, quite literally, onto his bed.
He paused for a moment, extremely indecisive, then left. She owed him, but he didn't plan on collecting tonight. Tonight he would be busy.
Off to work, he told himself. He went to a cabinet in the main room and put on gloves and a full-head ski mask. He debated with himself over whether or not he should take his gun, but he didn't bring it with him. Off to work, off to work.
----------
Panic hit Nell the moment she came out of sleep. Questions bombarded her. Where was she and why was it dark? She answered that question first: she was in The Afterdark's home. In his room. She got up, flailing her arms.
Jesus, she thought, this bed is huge.
Nell made it to the door and hit the light. For a bedroom, it was unreasonably massive. Like all of Derek's furniture, it was larger than normal but still to scale. It made Nell feel like she was very small (although she was). It was like being the wrong brand of doll for a given dollhouse.
The room was immaculate except for the bedding that Nell had shaped into a squirrel's nest in her sleep.
