(INTERLUDE CONT'D)
He contacts all the people he knows he can trust and asks around. Do you know anyone with cryokinesis? He keeps having to ask. Eventually he got a hit--a fellow villain named Fissure knows of one. Fissure says that the cryokinetic doesn't even have a name for himself, but gives The Afterdark the guy's address. Fissure is reluctant to share the information, but he would rather be on the cryokinetic's bad side than The Afterdark's.
Derek layers up. Long johns, sweaters, coats, hat, scarf. He says to Fixer, I'm going to fix the weather.
He leaves. He goes to the address that Fissure gave him. Derek finds a young man sitting in a chair, water condensing on his skin and freezing. Derek pulls out his laser gun and kills the man. He realizes that life in the real world is so much easier than in fiction. He goes home and sits on the couch next to the pile of blankets in which The Fixer resides. Fixer asks, What did you mean when you said you were going to fix the weather?
I killed the person who changed it, he explains. Part of the Afterdark is still consumed by the adrenaline rush he got from shooting the young man, and his hands twitch in his lap.
Nell see's the after effects of his bloodlust. She accepts the statement as fact and does not question it. She says, Thank you for saving my life. How can I repay you?
Tell me about yourself, he says.
I'm Nell Conrad. I'm a technopath for mechanisms and machines with a bit on the side for computers. I can see through one-way glass, tell how much power is left in a battery by touching it, and I'm immune to electrical shocks except for my epidermis. I can do math and science but I don't know how I do them.
I'm Derek, and you, Nell Conrad, owe me big time.
