snippet from Nell and The Afterdark
Nell and The Afterdark
She was not surprised that she had fallen asleep on the couch next to Derek (it was no stranger than the time she had fallen asleep at his kitchen table) but she was surprised that he had put up with her as companionably as he had and allowed her to remain next to him during the night, sapping him of body heat.
His left elbow was resting on the armrest, left hand in his lap, his right arm on top of Nell and acting as an extra blanket. Derek's chin rested on his chest, and his bare feet stretched out in front of him. The girl remained motionless, and wondered briefly if she had ever been this close to anyone before. She had not, and it bothered her that the only person who would permit her to be near him was a violent killer with a downright creepy sense of humor.
It made her sad that she was so alone that she looked for companionship in The Afterdark. It was disturbing that she received it.
