Dream
I lay there in the grass, waiting for him and imagining a world where time would stop and we can remain here forever. But the sun continues in its travels, refusing to oblige my small wish. The sound of footsteps turns my head to where he is now walking towards me. He walks slowly as though this time will last an eternity. But we both know that it will not, that our time here will soon be over and we will have to part once more for times unknown.
"I missed you." his only words as he lies next to me and pulls me close.
"I missed you, too." I say smiling, clinging to him as though he will disintegrate in my arms.
We lay silent for a while, listening to each others breathing, simply holding the other, seemingly unaware of the time passing. But we both feel the sun silently mocking us. Our eyes never leave the others as though they will cease to exist if we do.
"I don't want to leave." Small smiles spread on our faces at the words we utter in unison. We snuggle ever closer into each others arms.
"I have something for you." he murmurs, his eyes lighting up. "Do you want to see it now or later?"
"Ummm..." His eyes darken. "Can I see it now?" The look in his eyes was worth it.
He reaches into his pocket and pulls out a small, black box. My heart almost stops at the sight of his hands trembling as he gives it to me. My hands are shaking too and we both laugh softly. The air is thick and it is hard to breathe.
I hesitate. “Open it, please?” His eyes are eager, pleading so I slowly lift the lid.
Inside was a silver locket the size of a quarter. Mesmerized, I simply stare.
“You don’t like it.” It wasn’t a question.
“No, Baby, I love it it’s beautiful.” I pause, unsure of what to say. “Will you put it on me?”
His angels face lights up as he takes the box from me. I hold my hair off my neck so he can fix the clasp. When he finishes his hands slide to my shoulders and he kisses the back of my neck where the clasp rests.
“Open it.” He whispers against my skin, his breath sending shiver through me. Then pulls me back against him, waiting.
I try to open the locket but my hands are trembling violently. “Do you want some help?” A whisper next to my ear.
“Please.” My voice was small and quiet. He laughs silently, his body shaking against mine. Reaching around me he opens the locket and holds it out for me. Inside it is something small and folded.
“Take it. It’s for you.” His voice was thick with anticipation.
I unfold it as though I hold a life in my hands. It is a life, our life. The one we have when we are together, alone here.
The unfolded picture is one of us sitting just like this. In small, careful letters are words
