“Brittany.” It made me look up from where I’d been staring at his shoulder intently. His eyes were scorching but somehow soft at the same time. They made me stop fighting the music and move with it. Move with him. I don’t know how many songs passed or even who was dancing around us. My eyes never left his as we danced.
Suddenly, his body went still against mine. I saw a hand wrap around his shoulder and knew whose it was even before he turned to reveal Lily.
“Hey baby.” The smell of alcohol was heavy on her breath and the air around her.
“Hi Lily.”
“Dance with me.”
“I’m already dancing with someone.” That made her turn, with a glare, to me.
“So you really did leave me for her, huh?”
“Lily, I didn’t leave you. You left me.”
“But I want you back. I miss you.”
She tried to kiss him and my arms tightened around his neck, pulling him away without thought but I didn’t have to because he stepped away from her before she’d moved an inch. I had time to think that we shouldn’t have done that just before she lunged at me, her hands going for my face. Aiden pushed me out of her reach and into Bear’s arms. He picked Lily’s kicking and screaming frame up and carried her out the door. Bear told me to stay with Nikki before he left to help. Nikki pulled me away as my eyes watered and barely got me into the bathroom before the tears spilled over.
“What happened?”
“We were dancing and then she came up and grabbed him because she wanted to dance with him but he said that he was dancing with me and she went for me.”
“Are you okay?”
“Yeah, I’m fine. She didn’t touch me.”
“If you’re okay then why are you crying?”
“Because she ruined it! When we were dancing it felt so good and she just ruined it! It almost felt like he wanted to be there, like he wanted me instead of his mystery girl.”
“Honestly babe, I don’t think he saw anyone but you when you two were dancing. The way he was looking at you, it reminded me of how Bear looks at me.”
“Yeah, right.”
“Yeah babe that’s right.” Her tone made me look up.
“All he can think about is the girl Lily left him over.”
“What girl babe?”
“When he came over last night he said that ever since he met her it was like no one else existed. And when he was talking about her today, it was like he was in love with her.”
