“You sure?”
“Yeah, it’s fine.”
“I’ll be right over.”
“See you.” I t sounded more like ‘I love you.’
“See you, Hun.”
“Bye.”
“Bye.” He hangs up so I do.
I sat there for a moment in shock. I stood and walked over to the mirror. I was a mess. Looking around for a shirt, I stepped into my jeans and buttoned them up. I changed into my favorite black tank top and began to run a brush through my hair. As I was pulling a pair of black socks on, I heard something hit my window. He didn’t knock because he didn’t want to wake everyone else up. After one last glance in the mirror, I started for the door.
My heart was racing as I tiptoed down the steps. The locks were never louder than now. As soon as I opened the door he was holding me, crushing me against him. After a moment, I held him back. His heart is racing right along with mine. We stood there for a moment like that then he pulled away and I let him. I close the door quietly and reset the locks before leading him upstairs to my bedroom, even though he knew the way. He shut the door when we were inside.
“I know I said that I would tell you but I can’t take that right now. I’ll tell you later, I promise, but I can we talk about something else or do something else first?”
“Sure. . .What do you want to do?”
“How about we watch a movie?”
“Which one?” pointing to the towers of videos in the corner.
He pulls one out of his pocket. “How about this one?”
“Cool.”
I climbed into bed while he cut the movie on. Then he joined me, laying his head on my lap as he always did when we watched movies together. The video was one of my favorite, but I barely heard or saw any of it in my worry for him. I examined every inch of him. His beautiful, light eyes were unseeing though they were glued to the screen. A white T-shirt hugged his arms and torso snuggly. His legs were clad in scuffed jeans that almost covered weathered work boots.
I didn’t notice that the movie was over until he sat up and said, “You ready to hear this?”
“I am if you’re ready to tell.”
He paused like he was trying to put the words together before he spoke. “We’re over.”
It took me a second to catch on. “You and Lily?’
“Yeah.”
“What happened?”
“She said that it was like I didn’t want to be with her anymore, like I would rather be
