Dream
“He was the first person I told. You were the second.”
“What did he say?”
“He said that he would give us his name if I wanted it and that he wanted to be with me when I told my parents.”
“So your parents don’t know yet?”
“No they don’t.”
“How are you going to tell them?”
“I don’t know. I guess I’ll just tell them the truth and let them take it however they want to.”
“Have you been to a doctor yet?”
“I have an appointment with Stacey next week.”
“Are you going to tell them before then?”
“If I can I am.”
“What do you want?”
“A boy.”
“And what does Aiden want?”
“He wants me happy.”
She didn’t seem to know what to say to that. “Can I see the ring?”
I gave her my hand. She held the ring but didn’t take it off my finger. I felt her turn the ring around until his name showed. “How did he get that done?”
“His great-grandfather made it for his fiancé. There isn’t another one in the whole world.”
“You really love him.”
“What makes you say that?”
“The look you had when you were talking about him just now. He has the same look when he talks about you. Did you know that?”
“I didn’t until now.”
“Don’t forget it, okay?”
“Alright.”
She put my ring to rights then let go of my hand. “How do you think your parents are going to take it?”
“I don’t know. I hope they’re okay with it, but after what we did to get here I don’t think it’s just going to go over smoothly.”
“They’re your parents and they love you, you know that.”
“Yeah, I know that but what happens if they want me to get rid of the baby?”
“That’s for you to decide.”
“I won’t be able to tell them no.” There was a bitterness that I couldn’t keep out of my voice.
