He put his arm around my waist and I wrapped mine around his as we walked back towards the lights and sounds that filtered through the trees. A thought stopped me in my tracks.
“Why did you look so mad earlier?”
“When?”
“When you picked me up.”
“Because I knew that no matter who else was at this party I would be bringing the most beautiful girl in the world with me and she wasn’t even mine so when every guy at the party was looking at you I wouldn’t be able to do anything about it besides hate them.”
“I thought it was because you didn’t like what I was wearing or you didn’t like my hair or something like that.”
He kissed me then. “You look beautiful. Even Ash said that he couldn’t help looking at you tonight.”
“Bear said that?”
“Yeah he did. And he told me that I was lucky.”
“Why?”
“Because I had a girl that loved me as much as Nikki loves him. And that even though almost every guy has hit on you at one point tonight you ignored them all.”
“I didn’t want them.”
“I know that now. When you said you were hoping for that guy to be here I almost begged you to tell me who so I could be sure he wouldn’t. I was so angry that he even existed. But you meant me didn’t you?”
“Yeah and I was your girl.”
“Of course. So why the change?” he ran his hand through my hair as he asked.
“I wanted you to notice me and forget that other girl. I guess it didn’t work.”
“It worked.”
“You forgot me already?” I pretended to be appalled and he laughed.
“No, but I haven’t thought about Lily or anyone else all day because I was with you.”
“Can I ask you a question?”
“Of course you can.” He kissed the edge of my jaw.
