“I know you don’t want to leave and you are scared about what will happen, but I want to be with you forever and this is the only way that I know that will happen. You don’t have to come; I would never make you do something you didn’t want to, but I’m leaving tonight. I’ll wait for you at the hotel if you decide you’re going with me.”
“What happens if I don’t show up?
“I have to get out of here. I can’t stay after what happened.”
“You’re gonna leave me?”
“I don’t want to but I don’t think I can stay here after all of this.”
“How long will you wait?”
“Midnight. I’m leaving at midnight.”
“I’ll be there.”
“Promise?”
“I promise.”
“I’ll see you then.”
(Aiden kisses her softly on the lips. He is smiling as she climbs out of the truck. She is somber as she walks up to the house. No one is home as she slips through the house and up to her room. She stands there for a moment then grabs a duffel bag and begins throwing clothes and other things into it. After the bag is full she looks around grabs her keys and runs out of the house. She throws the bag in the back of her silver car, turns the key, slams the door, and throws the car into drive.)
“Goodbye.”
(She drives down the road toward the hotel. She is driving too fast, but she passes no other vehicles on the winding road. Her eyes are locked on the road, her hands making sure she does not crash as her mind wanders over her thoughts of a different world, a different life. When she finally reaches the hotel parking lot, the clock on the dashboard reads 11:00. His truck is there but he’s standing in front of it watching her headlights come closer. He hadn’t changed. Aiden walks over to her. His expression is relieved. He opens her door and lifts her into his arms breathing heavily.)
“Hey. You came.”
(I snuggled into his arms and buried her face against his throat.)
“I told you that I would. I love you.”
(Aiden looks at their reflection in the window.)
“I love you, too. Look at us, love. We’re perfect.”
(I lift my head to see what he means. We are centered perfectly with their arms wrapped around each other.)
“We are.”
(Aiden set me on the ground and tilted my chin up to face him.)
