he had never spoken before. He said them now, in my ear, as I read them. “I love you, Brittany Marie.”
Tears fall, blurring the world. He doesn’t understand.
“What’s wrong? You didn’t want to hear that? I’m sorry. Please don’t cry, Baby. I’ll never say it again, just please stop crying.” The tears I hear in his voice match the tears I see in his eyes as I turn in his arms to face him. The tears we cry fall and mix together like the saddest rain. I never thought I would see tears in the eyes of my strong, unbreakable knight. But they fell now.
“I’ve wanted to hear you say that since the day we met. I have wanted to tell you for so long that I feel the same way. Please don’t ever stop saying it.” My voice was steady through the tears as I held him to me. I watched as things clicked together in his mind and that heart-breaking smile spread across his face. His hands trembled as he reached for me.
“Why didn’t you tell me, Baby?” Amazement flashed across his face all but covering the doubt that was still there.
“I wanted to tell you so bad. I was just so afraid. . .”
“Of what?”
“That you didn’t feel the same way. That you wouldn’t stay.”
“I told you that I would always stay for as long as you want me here.”
“And I will always want you here.”
“Then I will be here no matter what happens.”
“Promise?”
“Swear.” He sealed his vow with a kiss and held me close. “Will you promise me something?”
“What?”
“That you’ll always tell me the way you feel.”
“Always?”
“Please?”
“I promise.”
He kissed me gently. “Thank you.”
“Always.”
He started to hum then. It was my favorite song and I slowly drifted to sleep.
When he woke me it was near dark. I grabbed his hand and let him lead me sleepily away. When we reached the truck I let him put me in the passenger seat. I snuggled close to him as he drove us home. There wasn’t a sound except the motor and our breathing.
“I don’t want you to go home.”
“Then I won’t.” chuckling.
“You have to.”
