Dream
“Whoever she is, I know for a fact that he forgot all about her when he was dancing with you.”
There was a knock on the door before I could tell her that she was wrong. “Britt? Are you okay?”
“Yeah, I’m fine. Where’s Aiden?”
“He took Lily home. He told me to make sure that you were okay, said he wanted to give you some time.”
“When’s he coming back?”
“Right after he gets Lily home.”
“Can I stay with you two until he gets back?”
“Of course you can.”
“Chica?”
“Yeah babe?”
“Let’s go dance.”
“You sure?”
“What better way is there to pass the time?”
“Dancing it is then.”
She opened the door and I followed them onto the battlefield that I had just left to wait for Aiden.

He got back sometime later but didn’t come to dance with me so I didn’t go to him. From across the room, I watched him put on his fake smile for the world even though I know something is wrong. His smile is not the one he smiled earlier. It is the mask that hides the fact that all is not well. His dark eyes matched the black shirt he wore over his faded jean shorts that reached down below his knees. Black tennis shoes covered his probably bare feet.
“God, you’re sexy.” The high, flirty voice scares him as much as it enrages. I wanted to go over and pull her away but I only watched as she attempted to get his attention for more than a moment.
“Would you excuse me for a second?” It was his way of telling her, politely, he wasn’t interested.
“Sure.” Disappointed but not put out, she moved on to others.
As he surveyed the room his eyes caught mine, not fleetingly as the others did, like he was looking for me. Then he turned and walked out the door. My curiosity to know where he is going sent me following him, instinct telling me that I had to go with him.
I knew the woods like I was born knowing them, I never made a sound as I trailed behind and he
