Chapter 5
Sheelin
Monday. The most hated day ever. It is the one thing that people of different cultures, religions, races, and walks of life all share in common.
I was riding the bus with Mila and I wanted to tell her what happened six years ago. I wanted to get everything off my chest. She was there with me and I felt like she deserved to know. I felt like I owed it to her to explain why I have issues with school. I mean, she practically took me in and helped me without even knowing it. I wouldn't be where I am if it wasn't for her. But should I? Technically, I don't owe her anything. It's my life and she doesn't need to know anything about it. Although, she's one of my best friends and best friends share everything with each other, right?
"What's up?" Mila said.
I looked around confused, "What do you mean?"
"You're doing that thing," she said, "With your lip?" I looked at her even more confused. "Whenever you're nervous, you bite your lip. A lot." Shit. She knew I was thinking about something serious.
"N-Nothing's wrong," I said.
"You're lying," she said without even blinking. I sighed and opened my mouth, but then the bus came to a stop. This was Lamai's stop. I didn't want her knowing yet. I'd tell Mila and see what happens.
"It's nothing," I said guiltily. She narrowed her eyes, but left it at that. We all sat in silence, but this time, it was an awkward silence, at least between me and Mila. I stared out the window and pretended to be interested in the scenery that was flying past us. When we came to a stop, I practically flew out of the bus and down the aisle. I looked back and saw Mila giving me the eye. I went to my locker and found Ben there.
"Hey," I said.
"What's up?" he said furrowing his brows. He knew something was wrong too. Why was it suddenly easier for people to read me?
"Later," I said absentmindedly. He looked at me worriedly, but shrugged it off. I blasted through a majority of my classes without talking or looking at Mila by sitting near Ben and talking with him. I could feel her glare piercing through the air and hitting me on the back of my head. Then sixth period happened. The one class I have with Emily just happens to be the last one in the whole entire day.
"Hey, Sheelin," Emily said just a little to sweetly.
"Um, hey?" I said.
"Why don't you come sit with us?" she asked, gesturing at a table full of people I hate; fake-and-bake blondes with implants.
"No, I'm good," I said steely.
"Then let me just say," she growled, "stay away from Ben. He's mine. We were made for each other! I'm
