Even though it was almost winter break, the rest of the week was uneventful. I had a midterm everyday and I studied at Ben's house. I still hadn't asked him. I just couldn't. And I hadn't told Mila either. The news about Thomas and Emily having Chlamydia was still a hot topic. In the hallway she announced that she was going to the doctor to get this settled once and for all. She also declared that she knew who the three girls were. News that Ben and I were together spread like wildfire, but it wasn't a scandal. People learned to deal because Ben was Ben and he commanded respect. Lamai and Dan had also taken hesitant steps forward in their relationship. I didn't get it though, she had a great guy and they were taking it slow, which is good, but at the rate they're going, if they ever got married he'd probably pop the question when they were in their late 30s.
Everyone was tired from taking finals so there wasn't much chatter on the bus. I flopped down in our usual set next to Mila.
"So any fun plans for over break?" she asked, eyes closed.
"Just hanging out," Lamai said, resting against the bus window.
"Same," I said, resting my head on the back of the seat so I could stare at the ceiling.
"You talk to Ben yet?" Mila whispered in my ear.
I shook my head and closed my eyes. The bus ride was silent. No gossip, no mindless chatter, just silence. At every stop people shuffled off and quietly walked home. No plans were made and no goodbyes were said. Then again, this was the bus with the most people in L4L in it and we weren't really into the whole 'OMG I'll really miss you' thing. My stop came up and I dragged myself out of my seat.
"Have a good break, Ms. Malone," I said tiredly. I think I shocked her when I said her name because no one pays attention to the bus driver, but I was glad she was our driver. I walked up to my house and fumbled with my keys for a bit before finding the right one.
"I'm home," I said to no one, and no one answered. I sighed and flopped down on the couch to sleep.
It was Saturday, exactly a week since we'd had our fun at the park. I was planning on having more fun today, but only me and Ben. And no, before you ask, not that kind of fun. We were going to hang out downtown. I was pulling on my blue and green plaid skirt when the doorbell rang. Smoothing my black shirt, I ran and opened the door. Ben stood there, looking good as always.
"You ready to go?" he asked.
"Yeah, just let me get my shoes," I smiled. When I pulled my last shoe on, I tapped it twice on the ground out of habit and for good luck. Then I closed and locked my house.
