"Just so you know," he said as soon as they were away from Emily, a smile tugging at his lips, "You don't have to stay all night if you don't want to,"
"If you're inviting me over for the night," I said shyly, just in case he was using her to tell Emily to back off, "I don't think my parents will have a problem with that," He smiled and I melted.
"Well," he said, "I have Spanish next,"
"And I have French," I sighed, "See you later?"
"Yeah," he said, flashing one of his heart-stopping smiles and walked down the hallway. I ran up the flight of stairs and walked into the classroom.
"Oh la la," Lamai said, "looks like somebody is falling for a certain guy pretty hard,"
"Just make sure you have a parachute or else you'll crash," Mila warned. I nodded grimly at the warning. Mila had had a couple of relationships that didn't work out and she ended up emotionally hurt. I knew she was just watching out for me, but I was afraid she would disprove if anything happened between Ben and I. I know that this is my life and I don't have to listen to her, but she is one of my best friends and if I completely ignore her, it would have the same effect as if I stole her boyfriend (if she even had one right now).
For the rest of the day, I couldn't stop thinking of Ben. His quirky smile, the way his hair hung just right, his clothes that didn't show off his body yet it did, the way he joked with me, and the way he blew off Emily. What was I thinking?! Mila had just warned me and now it's like I'm skydiving without a parachute and the ground is seconds away! At the end of the day, I found Ben and we walked home.
"You know that you don't have to do this to get away from Emily," I said, keeping all emotion from my voice, something I picked up from being in L4L. He looked at me like I was crazy. I was crazy! I was one of the most invisible girls in school, yet I somehow landed an unofficial date with the hottest guy! On top of that, I was crazy for him!
"I don't want to go to Thomas' party," he said.
"So you used me," I said, rage creeping into my voice.
"No," he replied, "that didn't come out the way I intended it to. I don't want to go to Thomas' party because I want to be with you,"
I stopped in my tracks, "Why?" I cried, confusion and frustration were woven into that one word, "Why are you doing this to me? Is this some sort of sick game you're playing? You could have any girl in the whole entire damn school, so why me? I have unmanageable, flaming-red hair, I don't dress in designer brand clothes, I'm in a gang for crying out loud!" I pulled up the edge of my shirt and showed him my tattoo. I stood there, trying to keep calm and any shred of dignity I had left, but humiliating tears rolled down my cheek anyway. He looked at me and brushed the tears away.
