"Honey," Mom said, "Go warm the car up. Kyle, Drake, and I will bring her downstairs,"
"Mom," I said, "I can walk,"
"No," she snapped, "You are not walking to the car," We argued until Dad honked the horn and I gave in. The ride to the doctors office was painfully quiet. I was claustrophobic because Kyle was on my left, Drake was on my right, and my mom's worried face blocked the front.
My doctor was Dr. Wichra. She did a couple basic tests and told me and Mom to recount what had happened. She then asked to speak to my parents alone. I nodded and stepped outside with my brothers.
"Five bucks each," I whispered.
"Fifteen," Kyle countered.
"Ten," I hissed.
"Fine," he grumbled. He put his head against the door crack and Drake put his ear near the crack between the door and the floor.
"Well?" I demanded impatiently.
"Heart," Kyle began.
"Murmur," Drake finished.
"Heart murmur? What the hell's a heart murmur?" I muttered to myself.
"ASD," they said in unison, breaking my concentration.
"ASD?" I whispered. I sat there in a leather chair for three minutes. Kyle and Drake had given up on eavesdropping duty and fidgeted beside me. My palms started to sweat and I was anxious to get out of there. I was like a cornered animal; trapped, ready to pounce, and volatile. The door opened and I jumped out of my seat. My mom looked at me unfazed.
"She wants to see you," my dad said as he ushered my mom towards the chair I had just been sitting in.
"Aren't you coming with me?" I asked nervously.
Mom's eyes grew wide and she shook her head. Dad gestured behind Mom's back to her then to me and then to Dr. Wichra's office. It was like an unspoken code, but I understood. I slowly opened the door and walked in.
"Well," she began, "most of your tests were fine, but-"
"What's ASD?" I asked, cutting straight to the chase. She looked at me surprised. "I have two younger brothers who want money," I explained.
"Ah," she said, pushing her falling glasses up her nose, "well I assume you heard about the heart murmur too?"
"I heard most of it," I said, this was irritating me. I just wanted to know what was wrong with me and fix it.
"So you know it's a heart defect?"
I sat up straighter, "Ten bucks can only get me so far," I said warily
