Chapter 2

Sheelin
I woke up and panicked. I didn’t remember falling asleep on my couch, but now I was waking up on it. I looked over and saw a lump lying on my other couch. I crept over and slowly pulled back the blanket, ready to strike it if necessary. Lamai. I sighed in relief. She began to stir and I backed up.
“What time is it?” Lamai asked, looking around the room.
I glanced at the clock and said, “Eh… about five-thirty,” Lamai tried to leap off the couch and ended up getting tangled in the blankets and falling to the floor. I cringed as she hit the ground.
“Aren’t we going to be late?” she asked as she detangled herself. I shook my head and walked upstairs to tame my wild, flaming, orange hair. I heard Lamai groan and run upstairs to the bathroom. I slapped the play button on my iHome and tried to focus on the music that poured out of the speakers.
I closed my eyes and ran my fingers through my tangled hair. I felt a groove on the back of my head.

‘It’s too dark,’ I thought to myself, ‘we’ll never find her,’ I stopped running and looked around helplessly. Mila kept running into the darkness. I turned around to head back to where it was safe. I could see the light from the fire. I thought I was safe. I thought this was just a bad dream. Maybe I can wake up.
I ran out of the trees and sat down on the log. I tried to make sense of what had just happened. A man had come and taken Lamai. We were trying to find her. Correction; Mila was trying to find her. I was sitting on a log doing nothing.
“I feel so useless!” I screamed.
“Don’t worry,” a voice purred, “we all feel that way at one point in time,”
Stars. Blinding light, then nothing.
“Is she alright?” my mom asked.
“She was hit in the back of the head with a shovel. She may not survive, but if she does, she will have severe memory... issues,” a male voice said. Mom started wailing and begging to see me. I thought she was too loud and tried to tell her, but I could barely move. I was able to sort of twist my head in the direction of her voice, but pain shot through the back of my head. Before I was out of it again, I heard the heart monitor’s beeping get faster. A clipboard hit the ground.
“What’s going on?” my mom panicked.
“Ma’am, we’re going to have to ask that you leave the room,” he said. Footsteps pounded into the room. I could feel people working fast around me. Another needle was stuck into my arm.
