"We got all the mattresses we could find," Ben said as I walked back in.
"Alright," I replied distractedly. So much for trying to appear normal. "I'm going to start cooking then,"
I moved around the kitchen in a daze. It's like when you go on a Tilt-a-Whirl at the fair. It feels like you're in a dream as you get crushed into the person right next to you. Well, it's not really a dream, but the sensation of blood leaving your head makes it feel that way, or at least it does for me. Mila yelled something about going for a run with Josh and I guess I made a noise of acknowledgment.
I waited for the noodles to cook and I let everything that happened today run through my mind. Emotions flew across my face as I recalled my mom's worry then her anger and my despair when I found out and guilt. Oh there was a lot of guilt. I felt guilty for lying to my mom, for putting so much stress on her, and for avoiding Dan. Oh god, Dan. He probably thinks I'm the biggest bitch of all time.
"Hey," Sheelin said softly, "is everything okay?"
"Hm? Oh, yeah, everything is fine," I said.
"No, you're not fine," she said, studying my face, "Do you want to talk about it?"
"I... I don't know what to say," I said, studying the cracks in the floor.
"Start from the beginning,"
"Which beginning? I'll admit that there are a few things bothering me right now, but they all have different starting places and end right here,"
"Then let's start with the obvious; your mom,"
"She called you guys a bad influence and a gang," I said tiredly.
"How dare she!" Sheelin exclaimed in mock horror, then in a more serious voice added, "She found out about last night and didn't let you explain?"
"I'm sure I could've explained, but I wouldn't. We're two different people; she was the head cheerleader type, and I'm... well I'm me,"
"Hon," she said, arching her eyebrow, "You guys will always have your problems. Just accept it and move on,"
"Okay," I said slowly, "but what about everything else?"
"Like what?" she prompted.
"I went to the doctors today after I, er, fainted and I have a... health issue," I love Sheelin and all, but there's no way I can tell other people about this yet.
"Well," she said, catching on that I wasn't going to tell her specifics, "There's got to be something else?"
