Lakas For Life
We walked down to the Starbucks and got drip coffees.
"I didn't know you liked drip coffee," Ben said.
"There's a lot of things people don't know about me," I said coyly. We chatted aimlessly for the next couple of blocks until we were interrupted.
"Sheelin?" Mila's voice called out. I groaned as I turned around to face her.
"Hey!" I called, "What are you doing down here?" She and Josh were walking down the sidewalk towards us, only Mila was wearing a sports bra and yoga pants.
"We just left the gym," she explained.
"More boxing?"
"Yup," she said, "Oh, hey, Ben, I was wondering what your thoughts were,"
"Thoughts?" he repeated. Shit. She was talking about the offer that I hadn't quite told him about.
"Yeah, I told Sheelin to ask if you felt like becoming one of the Lakas," she said.
"I wasn't told anything," he said, looking extremely confused.
"Oh," Mila said, turning towards me, "It was my understanding that she told you on Tuesday and that you were thinking it over because it's not a decision to take lightly,"
"It might have slipped my mind," I clipped.
"Maybe you should remember," she said. Her blue eyes pierced mine, "Or is there some reason you don't want him to join?"
"I'd love it if he joined," I growled. We were nose to nose now.
"Really? Or is it because he hasn't gone through what we've gone through and therefore wouldn't qualify?"
"What haven't I gone through?" he asked.
"Yeah, Sheelin, what hasn't he gone through?" Mila mocked and added in a whisper, "What have you gone through that he hasn't, hm? What happened in the woods that would prevent you from asking him?"
"Why don't you tell me what happened in the woods? I saw you after that and I knew what you were like before. You changed, so what changed you?"
"What changed in me is my own damn business," Mila growled. Josh grabbed her arm and Ben took mine.
"I think it's time to go, Mila," Josh said loudly to break her concentration.
"Nice to meet you," Ben said to Josh.
"Likewise," he replied. Ben turned us and walked us in the opposite direction.
"So why didn't you tell me?" he asked. He was hurt; I could hear it in his voice. He'd have to work on that.
