“Unpacking the rest of my stuff and studying,” Elle replied silently seething at her aching stomach. “But right now I think I’ll make some toast,” she added, jumping off the stool and heading for the bread.

Kate stayed while Elle finished eating and caught up on life. Kate knew she was in college, but she never knew what she was studying. It didn’t surprise her that her niece was in her third year of law school. Elle had always been in her father’s office helping him with a few cases he seemed appropriate for the young girl.

Elle hung up her clothes in the nice sized closet and folded the rest in her small dresser that she had stuffed in her car. She threw her shoes in an organizer that she had hung in the closet. Her schoolbooks and supplies went on the desk next to her laptop. She threw her mom’s old area rug in the middle of the room to make the new and strange place feel more like home. When everything was in place, Elle noted to pick up some miscellaneous things for her new home.

Later, before she hung up her mother’s paintings and her father’s photography, she noted that the walls would need to be re-painted and she mentally made a reminder to schedule that into her days.

Elle sat down and began to bring out her note cards and the books and articles she was using for research. She started at her desk with a pen in hand, writing down quotes and information on the large cards. On the other side, she wrote the reference for which the information was taken from. After a while, she became uncomfortable at her desk and moved to the floor with a disarray of note cards, flags and post-it notes. When Elle finally started on her paper, she moved to the balcony, deciding it would be a good idea to enjoy the summer air before the sun set. By the time she had finished typing, it was around ten at night and she finally paid attention to her growling stomach. She stepped into the kitchen where Glenda and Kate had been sitting as they discussed the schedule for the following day. Kate greeted her niece first, while Glenda started emotionless at her.

“Hey Elle,” Kate greeted her. “We didn’t see you at dinner? Everything okay?”
