Alex sat in her rendering class waiting for the second hand to land on the four indicating class had begun. It was the third week of class and she had all of the homework that she had been assigned finished nearly three days before class. She was a little doubtful that she shadowed and drew in the floor materials to her teacher’s standards, but she decided that it would have to do.
When break began she grabbed her purse and dug for her phone hoping to receive a text message confirming that her needed ride, as she walked to the vending machines. The first machine that she decided to purchase from was filled with energy drinks, soda, orange juice, and Starbucks Mochas. She slid her debit card just as she did many times before then pressed the twelve, but instead of retrieving the drink she had specified, the machine took the energy drink next to the Starbucks Mochas.
“What the hell?” she seethed silently as she took the can out of the machine, which instantly made the tips of her fingers crave for warmth. She looked down upon it and shrugged before going into the Quarterline Grill that was in the student center, to get something to quiet her growling stomach.
Before the twenty-minute break was over, Alex took a drink of the grape flavored Amp while waiting for Sylvia, the class’s instructor to resume class. She found that the carbonized drink made her stomach upset and Alex was thankful to feel her phone vibrate in her hand so she could throw the sugary liquid away in the trash bin outside.
“Hey, Danny” Alex said into the phone as she exited the building knowing that it was the best place for her phone to receive signal. Danny was short for Danielle and she had been Alex’s best friend since third grade and was now rooming with her in one of their college’s townhouses. Her other roommate was a little more like Danielle, but also a little more timid. Amber wasn’t the type of person Alex found herself having a lot in common. They never really just talked, but instead joked around.
“Don’t freak out if you come home to a naked guy on our couch,” Danielle replied laughing after words.
