Wishes
of the boxes.
He flipped off the lights again. Now that he was certain no one was waiting to murder him, he could focus on the task at hand.
For a moment he just stood there, waiting for his eyes to adjust to the darkness. Once he could see the vague outline of boxes again he began weaving his way through them, contemplating his options.
He saw it first out of the corner of his eye. When he turned to look at it, it was gone. Despite his unease he chose to ignore it.
Then he saw it again. A faint pinpoint of light. It was coming from the pool on the far end of the room.
Slowly he walked toward it. The glow seemed to increase as he got closer. Could his assassin have arranged a trap for him after all?
He peered into the pool. At first he couldn't make out anything distinct. Kneeling down seemed to clarify it a bit. Something like a face. A young girl?
She was smiling. For some reason the smile sent chills through him. And how had she gotten in there anyway? How was she breathing? Was it some kind of joke? Forgetting caution, he reached down into the water, wanting to see if there were really anything there.
Before he could react he was falling. It felt like the water had grabbed him. Panicking, he tried to thrash to the surface, but all around him there was nothing but darkness.
And then, she was there, smiling her creepy smile. She cupped his face in her hand as he struggled and leaned in for what seemed like a kiss.
Electricity flowed through his body. That's what it felt like anyway. The shock of pain was intense and everywhere and then just suddenly gone, and with it the girl.
The respite was brief. He was still under water, with no end in sight. His lungs were beginning to burn with impatience for air.
He flailed desperately, swimming toward what he hoped was up. His arms became leaden quickly, refusing to work. Fear overwhelmed his senses. He inhaled.
Choking, gasping. A fearful voice in his head screamed 'I'm going to die' over and over. The pain in his chest was sharp, but the slow fading of his senses was the bigger concern.
A hallucination appeared then, this time it was a tiny man, like one of
