"Well, no. I think maybe a bridge was not the right analogy..."
A shadow fell over the two of them. Eric looked up, and his eyes widened.
Above them there was a massive bird. It's wings seemed to span from one side of the horizon to the other. It opened its terrifying beak and screeched.
Eric cringed in pain, covering his ears. The sound made it impossible to concentrate, and he felt himself start to fall.
The ground was rushing toward him disconcertingly fast. He tried to focus, thought about the feeling of flying. His body failed to respond.
With a sickening thud he hit the ground. He expected pain, or maybe a quick jerk and then death. Instead, he felt himself ripple, like he was a liquid.
He opened his eyes and saw himself spread out in a pool of black tendrils. As he watched, the tendrils slowly retreated back into his body, just as before. Within seconds he was sitting on the ground, stunned but whole. All he could do was stare at himself, remembering the dark tendrils and the terrible sucking sound they made as his body reabsorbed them.
"Wake up you idiot!" The little man was yelling at him, barely audible above the screeching. The sight of his condescending little face made him angry enough that he managed to snap out of his haze.
The bird finally stopped screeching and looked down at where he had landed. It beat its gigantic wings and came toward him with unbelievable speed for its size.
"You have to hide! You can't escape it. It's too fast"
"Hide where? It's the size of the moon, I think it will find me!"
"If I have to tell you this every time you will die! For the last time, stop thinking like a human being!"
"I don't know how!" He screamed. There was no time. The bird slammed into the trees above him, momentarily caught. Its giant head snapped at him, growing closer and closer as branches snapped and fell around him.
I have to hide, I have to hide. His thoughts raced. Don't think like a human being. Think like a freaky black ooze monster. No problem.
The beak descended. He felt the bird's hot breath. I'm going to die, he thought. Eaten by a giant canary.
All he wanted to do was disappear. He closed his eyes tightly and just started thinking that over and over. Just disappear, just fade away.
He felt it just before he heard the telltale buzzing noise. That was followed
