Billy ignored this and instead focused on the large paper bag that Rose was holding.
"Is that your lunch?" He inquired, pointing to the bag which bulged frighteningly as if it were about to explode any moment.
"Oh." Rose said, looking at the bag and blushing, "Um. It's... not really lunch. I don't think you would call it lunch. I mean, you could eat it during lunch time and I think it would be delicious but, um..."
Billy rolled his eyes and reached for the bag, which Rose turned over sheepishly. Instead of the expected sandwich and juice box combination, she had stuffed the bag full of box after box of Pocky.
"Do you really plan to eat all of this?" He asked, incredulously.
"I thought you might like a box..." She said, looking at the ground.
"Did you think I would like ten boxes?"
"Kids, get in the car" Rose's mom injected angrily, "I want to get you to school as soon as possible so I can go back to bed."
Billy handed Rose the bag and got into the car. Rose seemed flustered when his hand brushed hers, but quickly regained her composure and jumped into the back seat behind her mother.
When they got to the school, Ms. Mackillop was the only one there. Rose's mom dumped them off quickly, without even acknowledging the teacher's existence, and was quickly gone.
Ms. Mackillop stood for a moment, looking at Billy and Rose. Her eyes moved to Billy and focused intently on his. After a few minutes of this he started to feel extremely awkward.
"Billy. How are you today?" She said sweetly, smiling the sort of smile she'd had in the principal's office, "You're not going to give me any trouble today I hope?"
"No. No trouble." He tried to convey a sense of extreme honesty and trustworthiness, but her focused stare was really causing him trouble.
"Good then." The smile didn't waver, "I'd hate to have an excuse to forbid you from any future field trips or activities."
She was threatening to take away something he normally cared very little about, but he made an effort to seem horrified and chastened by this threat.
"And you Rose." She said, finally turning, "What exactly do you have in that giant sack?"
