Wishes
The light felt solid on his skin. It was like he could taste it, warm and delicious and buttery. His mouth watered. He pushed himself up from the wet mud into a standing position, basking in the light.
Something inside him shifted. It was an extremely strange feeling, like his organs were trying to escape. The light tantalized him so much, he noticed it for only a moment.
He felt a last strange jerk and then the light was inside him. Suddenly his mind was filled with flashes of thoughts and emotions. A million faces flashed by in a second. The emptiness inside him welcomed it, drank it all in hungrily.
Abruptly the light flared. He had one last impression of a terrible fear. That fear disappeared within the endless pit inside of him and then there was only darkness.
He opened his eyes. At first he couldn't quite reconcile the darkness he saw with the daylight that streamed in around it. Then he looked down and found the source.
Where his chest had been there was a giant gaping hole. Inside an endless vortex of darkness swirled. Black tendrils reached out from the pit, caressing the air, searching for the morsel it had lost.
Horror gripped him. With it came sudden awareness, and the tendrils quickly retreated. Once they were safely inside, the hole closed itself with a soft slurp.
He reached up to caress the place where the hole had been. Only instead of the hand he knew so well, a bone white claw with long, blackened nails filled his vision. Horrified once more, he fell backwards into the mud.
His eyes slammed shut. If he looked one more time at that monster's hand he knew his sanity would be gone.
"You have to run!"
The familiar voice made him look up despite himself. It was the little man who had saved him in the lake.
"Run I said! She will find you soon, and she will never forgive you for what you've done."
"What I've done?" The voice that spoke the words was deep and echoey. It sent chills up his spine. Creeping horror began to overwhelm him again.
"Just follow me!" The little man ordered, darting off.
Eric stood, pushing away the dark thoughts. After all this time, he wasn't going
