"Wow, how did you do that?" Alice said in genuine amazement.
"Huh? Oh, I just used-"
"Magic!" came a voice from behind them.
They both turned towards it, and their gaze fell on the rather large crowd down the street. Most of them had gotten to their feet and were wielding various sharp objects. The guards had apparently drawn their swords and some were carrying crossbows. Seeing this Thomas took a step back.
"Thomas?" asked Alice, apparently oblivious to the now advancing crowd.
"I- I think we should start running now" he said, taking another step back. He felt his leg hit something and turned back to see Spring back on his feet and looking up at him with expectant eyes.
Suddenly there was another loud 'bang', another flash and a figure leapt out of the hole in the wall and started to run off. This was then followed by two more figures and then another following in a flat run. Apparently unable to control himself anymore, Spring leapt after them and ran after them barking.
Thomas saw him run, but kept his gaze on the crowd. It seemed to be moving forward, cautiously, but definitely towards them and definitely with some malicious purpose.
He hesitated for just a moment and then grabbed Alice's hand, turned and ran.
"Wha-" she started.
"No time to explain, just run!" he shouted. He turned and saw the large group starting to break into a run after them, many of them wielding various weapons. He felt the whiz of a stone next to him and tried to run faster, but Alice was barely keeping up.
He focused on the figures ahead of him. He could see Spring, still in the distance chasing after the four larger figures, all of which seemed to be heading deeper into the city.
"Thomas!" Exclaimed Alice, nearly losing her grip on his hand.
"Come on, we've got to get out of here!" He gripped it tighter and felt the wind rush by him.
They were coming up to an intersection of the street where it joined a main carriageway, meaning a street where carriages clattered up and down, halting only for the occasional stoppage in the flow of traffic.
Spring and those who he was chasing turned left, against the flow of coaches and he saw them disappear among them.
At first, he wondered if it was such a good idea to follow him, but a bolt from a crossbow passing just between his legs made up his mind.
Still holding Alice's hand tightly he pulled her into the road and stuck as close to the wall as he could, trying to avoid the main flow of the carts. Behind him he could hear the crowd getting closer, and the yells of cart drivers ahead of him, trying to avoid the small group weaving their way between the carts.
