sir." She shifted her weight slightly and continued. "The... view of guards in the Reparts is quite well known, sir."
He gazed down at the men for a while and then drew away from the fountain and looked towards the guard again.
"I see. Do you know who I am Lance Corporal?"
"Yes sir, Major Cornelius Armstrong, head of Arcor City Guard, sir." The man looked impressed, and drew himself up, straightening his back and giving a wide grin that showed off his white teeth.
"Indeed, Lance Corporal Arsen, and I find this situation, while of course, disheartening, to be no more than a rather big waste of time. Don’t you agree?." He gave her a look of defiance and stood with his arms outstretched, his armour glittering in the sunlight.
She looked back blankly, staring at a point somewhere behind him. He found this quite uncharacteristic of someone in position such as herself, and found it slightly irritating.
"Yes sir, if you say so sir, but-"
"I, know so, Lance Corporal." He grinned wider, but her expression did not change.
"Yes sir", she nodded in agreement, not taking her eyes away or blinking, "but there’s something else sir". He lowered his arms slowly and fixed his stare into her eyes.
"And? What would that be?"
"It’s the statue on the fountain sir."
His eyes momentarily flickered to the stone figure atop the fountain.
"And what of it?"
"It’s just that there should in fact be no statue there, sir"
He looked down at her, and sized her up. Her face was clear from any smirk or smile, and showed no signs of defiance or smugness. In fact it showed very little at all. He glanced up to the statue again. I appeared to have been sculpted in the figure of a guard.
"I see a statue, Lance Corporal, and I can’t think of a reason why there should not be a statue placed there." He added, "and you can stop saluting, you look like a fool".
She lowered the arm from her forehead and placed it by her side, but still stood up straight, staring directly ahead.
"There did happen to be a figure here before, but it has since been... Dismantled, sir".
"Obviously not, by the looks of things, anyone with eyes could see that".
"Yes sir, but this is not anything like the original statue sir. This one has an extreme likeness to..." Her voice trailed away, and he thought the saw her look down at the ground for a split second, but she blinked and continued, eyes straight ahead, "an extreme likeness to
