girl, maybe the kid, question them both. And, if that fails, she could always give that rather shady character waiting in the cells a good once over when she got back. It was almost too simple a plan, but it helped take her mind off the pain and gave her something to shoot for. As she ran down the street, sword in hand, a distance memory floated up and into her mind. It was forgotten quickly though, as she realised she wasn’t watching where she was going, tripped over a sack of wheat and promptly crashed into a large wooden cart.
Mari opened the door, stepped into the warm sun and breathed deeply. Then she coughed a couple of times to dislodge an errant fly and stood up again, trying not to break her composure. Behind her Garas emerged from the dark doorway and tried to cover up his eyes with his hand. He had protested, of course, and she knew that it might have been a bit much to get him up after just a few minutes, but he needed to be outside and get some fresh air.
"S’too bright, can’t I go back in?"
"No," she answered flatly. He grabbed his arm and forced upright. "Anyway, we’ve got to go find Thomas, he’s been gone for ages."
They started their slow walk down the street, leaving behind the large house behind them. She had picked it specifically so they wouldn’t be interrupted. It was one of the largest mansion in the area, but it had been burnt down by rioters, and the owners had abandoned it and never bothered to return. It had been around a while, so the place had already been picked clean of any valuables, which meant that many of the surrounding populous tended to leave it alone. The rumours that it was haunted also helped keep visitors to the minimum. Still, you couldn’t be too careful, so a couple of new-ish locks had been installed on the outside doors and windows.
The entrance was a in a strange place, opening into an side alley, with nothing but walls on either side, and It’s location wasn’t the most logical thing either. It took up much of the long street, but was only the width of the the houses next to it. It was as if someone had joined about five or 6 houses together and also added a couple of floors. It must have been quite ambitious at the time, she though, but she still couldn’t see why they had made it out of wood. Maybe the owners wanted something unique? Anyway, that wasn’t a priority right now, she was just going to try and enjoy the sun and the sights for a while. Oh, and look for Thomas of course, yes, right.
