"Stand back! Make way!" yelled a voice from one of the various roads that led into the square, shattering the silence.
A group of guards moved down the street towards the square. The crowd ahead parted silently. To the guards, this felt even more unnerving than if they had started yelling and throwing stones, they were used to that. Eyes followed them as they processed down the street.
They were being led by a helmet-less man with shoulder length blonde hair and blue eyes. Most ladies would say that he looked handsome. At least, that’s what he believed, and he wasn’t about to subject that point to much scrutiny. He wore much more armour than was necessary for the city guard, giving the effect of a knight fully dressed for battle, the shining metal highlighted with gold and he made small clinking noises as he moved. He strode purposefully towards the centre of the square surrounded by his faceless guards.
Standing there all ready was another guard. She had dull green eyes, framed by short, strawberry blonde hair. This had been cut so it wouldn’t interfere with the helmet she wore, which she currently held under her arm. She saluted as the squad approached.
"Lance Corporal Ashen reporting sir!", she announced in a loud clear voice.
"Yes, yes. Was it you who signalled the alarm?" said the armoured man in the centre of the guards. He signalling the remaining guards to fan out around the square with a wave of his hand and looked the saluting guard up and down, a faint smile forming on his face.
"Yessir", she replied, shifting position slightly under his gaze, "I thought it necessary at the time, sir", she added.
"Well, I don’t see much to be amiss here Lance Corporal", he said in a sing song type of voice.
"Sir", she said, still saluting, "I believe the problem is apparent if the fountain is observed sir".
His gaze travelled to the fountain, it was cracked and seemed to be devoid of anything that could be called water.
"I don’t seem to see the problem here" he said, shrugging while making further clinking noises.
"Inside the basin of the fountain sir" replied Ashen, standing resolute, staring at nothing in particular.
He walked over and leaned over into the fountain. At the bottom was the figures of two men, bound and gagged, stripped to their underwear.
"Ah, I see. And these two men are?"
"Privates Tailor and Grates, sir. They’re new recruits and were on patrol together here
