Then there was a laugh. It wasn't like the one before, this one was solitary, but cold, almost hollow, Thomas shivered as he heard it.
"Like I said", the voice cold and calm again, "I'm not one for talking".
Suddenly a loud ringing sound came from overhead, and Thomas jumped back in surprise. As he did so, the door in front of him disappeared in flash of light.
Somewhere from a side alley came a large brown dog. He sped down a row of stalls, nose to the ground and seemed to be following, something, intensely. He stopped for a while and sat down, panting softly with his tongue hanging out. Then he carried on, changing direction every few metres, following a seemingly invisible line on the ground with some alacrity. Behind him, a girl in a flowing dress was running, struggling to keep up.
"Please wait, ermm, doggy!" she cried out.
The dog stopped next of a seemingly blank wall and sat down, wagging it’s tail and looking pleased with itself. The girl managed to walk up to the wall and leaned against it resting her arms on it.
She stood there a while catching her breath, then pushed herself up, and composed herself. She was aware that the majority of the busy street was staring at her. A couple of guards had stopped and turned. She looked around and saw a sea of inquisitive faces.
She wasn’t quite sure why they were staring at her, or what she was supposed to do, but she had always been taught to be polite. She waved a hand in greeting and smiled nervously, but this caused some members to suddenly step back away from her. The guards had their hands to their swords and were edging closer. The collective eyes of the crowd widened and continued to stare at the moving hand as if it were a hypnotic pendulum. She lowered it slowly, looking confused and felt her nervousness start to creep back.
"Excuse me miss."
She turned and saw a lady who was slowly walking towards her, also with hand on her sword. She was dressed in a guards uniform ,and her face could just be seen in the gap of her iron helmet. There were a few strands of hair poking out of the bottom, and held a pair of dull green eyes. The guard was staring at her intently, with a vacant expression which made her feel slightly uneasy. She stopped a few feet short of her and spoke.
