A Prairie Home Apocalypse or: What the Dog Saw
The dog licked the girl's hand and gave a little whimper because of the hungry feeling in his stomach. She said some more words and started for the house. The dog ran after her with his tongue out in the wind.
The girl went inside to the kitchen. The blood and brains of the dead-thing were still scattered across the floor. The dog thought about trying to lick them up, but the smell was bitter and rotten, and the dog thought they would not taste very good. The girl was looking in the cupboards that ran along the floor and talking to herself, and the dog went over to see what she was doing. He put his nose on her arm and the girl squealed and jumped. Then she started laughing, and the dog saw she had a can of something in her hand. She went on talking while she did something to the can with a metal thing and then she pulled the top off the can and poured it out into a bowl. She put the bowl down on the floor and the dog sniffed it and licked at it to be sure it was not something nasty. It did not smell like the dog food that he liked to eat at home. It was sweet and fruity and the yellow chunks had a tangy taste to them, but the dog was very hungry, and once the fruity stuff was in his mouth he realized that it didn't taste bad at all. He ate the whole bowl, gulping down the yellow fruity chunks in big slurping clumps until the bowl was empty and he was licking out the sweet and tangy juice from the inside.
When he finished he looked up and saw that the girl had another can open and was leaning against the counter eating out of it with a spoon. Between bites she talked to the dog, and the dog did not understand the words, but he thought she sounded very serious and a little sad, so he sat and listened as well as he could.
Finally the girl finished eating out of the can and put it in the garbage. She went to a closet and took out a bucket. She put the bucket on the floor and started picking up the pieces of the dead-thing with her hands, and she made noises that sounded ugly and funny at the same time. When she was finished with most of the pieces she took the bucket outside and dumped the bits and pieces out over the fence. Then she took the bucket to a metal thing that came up out of the ground. She pushed up and down on a piece of the metal thing and the dog heard a loud squeaking noise coming from the metal thing. The dog watched and wondered what the metal thing would do. The girl pumped up and down for what seemed like a very long time and finally a trickle of water came out of one end of the metal thing and landed in the bucket. The girl kept pumping and more and more water came out. The girl washed the bad smell out of the bucket with the water. Then she filled it with fresh water from the metal thing. With the bucket in one hand she headed back into the house.
